The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has formed a technical committee to scrutinise the Bills, citing potential risks to Northern economic and social stability.

The LNDs spokesman, Dr Ladan Salihu, revealed that the committee, composed of legal, financial, and legislative experts, has a one-week deadline to recommend amendments that ensure justice and equity. This initiative underscores our commitment to promoting national unity and protecting the developmental interests of our people, Salihu emphasised.

While the Senate, under President Godswill Akpabio, progresses with the Bills, Northern senators have shown resistance, calling for wider consultations. Similarly, the House of Representatives, led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, postponed debates indefinitely due to opposition from Northern lawmakers.

Highlighting the regions stance, a representative from the North-East remarked, Our people have suffered enough. We must ensure these reforms do not worsen their plight.

In contrast, Southern lawmakers, including the Nigerian Southern Senators Forum (NSSF), back the reforms, advocating for a fairer tax system. They argue the changes will simplify tax collection and benefit all Nigerians, particularly the under-privileged.

As tensions rise, experts urge the Federal Government to foster transparency and collaboration in addressing the contentious issues, aiming for a resolution that benefits the nation as a whole.
